Nitin Sawhney, Professor of Practice, Aalto University

Activity Leader & Principal Investigator

Nitin Sawhney is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University. As a human-centered design researcher he examines the critical role of technology, civic media, and urban interventions in crisis and contested spaces. Nitin engages user experience design, participatory action research, sensory ethnography, and multi-modal (speech/audio) approaches for complex contexts of human-machine interaction. His current research is at the intersection of AI and HCI for humanitarian and crisis situations.

Johanna Kaipio
Johanna Kaipio, Professor of Practice, Aalto University

Co-Principle Investigator

Johanna Kaipio is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University. Her areas of research include usability of health information systems, user experiences of health and social care workers, patient experience, and usability in the procurement of IT systems. Her current research is focused on user participation in implementation of electronic health record systems.

Speechly is a pioneering software startup based in Helsinki, Finland, co-founded by Hannes Heikinheimo, Otto Söderlund, Janne Pylkkönen, and Markus Lång. The company has designed its own proprietary speech recognition technology “from the ground up” to support innovative voice-related user experiences. Speechly boasts an experienced team of speech recognition and natural language understanding experts. It has raised over €2 million in seed funding to make it easier for software developers to add a Voice-enabled UIs to their products, allowing highly reactive and seamlessly multimodal user experiences.

Trinidad Wiseman OÜ is a user experience (UX) design, business analysis and software development company based in Tallinn, Estonia and the largest in the Baltic region. Led by Ander Tenno, CEO and co-founder with a PhD from Aalto University, their specialty lies in designing complex information systems, web applications, interactive kiosks, mobile apps, and e-commerce solutions. Clients include Estonian public-sector institutions and ministries, EU institutions in Slovenia, Luxembourg, and Ireland, local Estonian telecom providers, healthcare providers, financial institutions, web portals, and many others. The rapidly growing company employs over 95 specialists with a revenue in 2019 of over 6,5 M €.
